Monday, May 26 Th. 2008 , was a great Memorial Day at
Maui polo club.
The 6th annual tournament, honoring Paniolo (cowboy) hall of fame Richard "Manduke"
Baldwin, was held at the club's Manduke Baldwin Polo Arena.
A record crowd showed up in force to watch what they knew was going to be an
awesome game.
To honor Manduke's cowboy heritage, the day started with a two chukker cowboy
Polo game.
Team Halekala Ranch with Cody Friels, Andi Aipa and Roland Kehanu played
against Team Wai'Ale with Henry "Hanalei" Wong , Lee Peters and Alan "Makawao"
Mendes.
Cowboy polo requires, working ranch horse, cowboy saddles and cowboy Hats with
Aloha shirts this is the attire for the opening game of the afternoon. Some cowboys even had
rolled up raincoats and tools attached to their saddles.
Haleakala Ranch won after 2 hard fought chukkers. The score at the end stood at
4 to 2.
Rich Roenisch bronzes were presented to the champions and Polo belt buckles to
the runners up.
Also Haleakala Ranch added their names to the perpetual Roenisch
bronze.
The stage was set for the second game. Team Manduke with Herman Louis Decoite,
Emiliano Achaval and Tomas Vila played against Team "Gordon" VonTempsky with Kawika
Manoa , Raymond Noh and Bob Nooney.
The first chukker was all for team Manduke. Several quick unanswered goals and
at the sound of the horn announcing the end of the chukker, the score was 4 to 0
in favor of Manduke's.
Kawika Manoa came out on Sparky, chosen the most valuable pony for the day,
on the second chukker and he seemed unstopable.
The "Gordon"s evened the score in the second chukker. At halftime the score was
tied at 4. A very enthusiastic crowd helped stomp the divots to the sounds of country
music and the encouragment of Maui Polo Club's long time anouncer Franklin
Crozier.
The last 2 chukkers were neck to neck the whole way. Both teams kept evenly
scoring. Halfway thru the third chukker, Referee Dan Healy, who specially flew
in from Honolulu to oficiate the game, called a penalty 5b. To the amazement of
the crowd Herman Louis evened the score with a 2 point conversion. The game was
tied 8 to 8 going into the 4 and final chukker.
Kawika once again played "Sparky" and HLD was on "Kahuku" the runner up
MVP Horse. It was a duel of horse power and polo. With 56 seconds left the score
was even at 10.
A penalty 3 was called against team Manduke and Kawika Manoa scored to give the
Gordon's the wining goal and the honor to have their names inscribe on the
perpetual Manduke baldwin Rich Roenisch bronze.
The champions took home beautiful bronzes by R. Roenisch home.
But everyone ended up the day a winner as the runners up also got great looking
Polo theme bronze boxes, also done by Walking R Holdings, Jan & Rich Roenisch.
Cowboy Haku lei's and players leis were made by Donna Otsuka.
A record 200 BBQ lunch plates were served by Julio Ramos and his band of great
helpers, once again Julio outdid himself !!
Right after the awards presentation, live music by Maui's own recording stars,
Bub's and the superduv 5 entertained the fans well into the Maui night.
A big Mahalo goes out to all the fans for their great support of Maui Polo Club.
A special thank you to Kathrine B. Achaval & Maui Polo & Rodeo Co. for
sponsoring a great day, an even better tournament, one that has quickly become
one of Hawaii's premier events in the polo scene.
Aloha & Mahalo, Emiliano Achaval.
